January 2020 Lessons In Living

January 2020 Lessons In Living

WEEK ONE

In this new year many resolutions will be made. Some will be kept and others will be forgotten. However, there is one resolution we should all make and keep – the spiritual resolve to fight the good fight, finish the course and keep the faith. Always remembering that if we do, there is laid up for us a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give us on the Judgment Day (2 Timothy 4:7-8).

WEEK TWO

Another resolution to keep this year. Work hard for the Lord – Visit the sick (Mt. 25:36), Support the weak (1 Thess. 5:14), Exhort the brethren (Heb. 3:13), Help instruct the young, Teach the lost and Prepare for the coming of the Lord (Mt. 24:44). If we get tired, rest for a moment (Mark 6:31), but never quit the work of the Lord or retire from His work!

WEEK THREE

Often the failure to seek God diligently comes from a refusal to see the ugliness of  sins which separate us from God – sins that will condemn us forever if we do not accept the gift of God: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). We should not have any trouble living for God when we understand how fortunate we are to be loved by Him. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

WEEK FOUR

Bible love is an active expression of goodwill – the very expression and essence of knowing God (1 John 4:7-10). God has shown us His love in the death of His son  “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8), and His love for us should be the compelling reason for us to love Him. “We love Him because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19).

WEEK FIVE

If all one does is listen to others talk about the Bible and only does some superficial reading while all the time mixing it with assumptions of present circumstances, there will always be lingering doubts as to its validity with no strong conviction to guide one in this life. The only solution to such is to make a deep study of the word of God and thus learn from its life’s lessons: “I have written to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, Because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you,” (1 John 2:14). Let us get the Bible off the shelf and into our head! (cf. Psa. 119:9-16).
